If you’ve never participated in an Escape the Box® event before, you might be wondering: What exactly happens? Do I need special skills? What will this be like? Your questions are perfectly understandable, this isn’t exactly like something that you have done before.

Good news, Escape the Box® is designed so that first-timers feel comfortable, included, and fully engaged from the very beginning.

Here’s what you can expect.

A Warm Welcome and Clear Instructions

Your experience begins with a live, professional host who sets the stage, explains the story, and walks everyone through what’s about to happen. You don’t need prior escape room experience, puzzle expertise, or athletic ability.

The purpose for your activity is described in detail with humor. Your group is set at ease, your host hands out kits and explains how to use the tools and materials in your kit.

Everything you need to know is explained clearly, and questions are always welcome. If you need help along the way, our facilitators are readily available to assist and offer encouragement.

Teams, Tools, and a Shared Mission

Participants are divided into small teams, even if the overall group is large. Each team receives a kit with tools like:

  • explorer maps
  • cipher wheels
  • Fictional newspaper
  • Magnifying glass
  • Notebook for notes
  • Answer sheet
  • Beautifully designed clues

People tend to relax once they see the quality and thoughtfulness of these items, and they quickly realize this isn’t about being the “smartest” person in the group,  it’s about working together.

An Outdoor, City-Based Adventure

Escape the Box® is an outdoor experience, which means:

  • you’ll be moving through a walkable neighborhood
  • engaging with public art, landmarks, and hidden details
  • solving clues as part of a larger story
  • Doing a good deal of exploring

The city itself becomes part of the game, making the experience feel dynamic, social, and energized, especially for large groups.

Puzzles That Are Fun, Not Frustrating

The challenges are designed to be:

  • achievable
  • varied (logic, observation, creativity, teamwork)
  • inclusive of different learning and communication styles

No one is expected to do everything. The best teams succeed by listening, sharing ideas, and playing to each other’s strengths. In fact, delegating tasks is a part of the fun. There is a role for everyone, including: navigator, photographer, investigator, cryptologist, DJ, comms person and box keeper.

The Teams Will Explore

Teams spend most of the game walking around the game zone, showing up to a mural or an iconic landmark, solving a clue with their team, and then moving on to the next task.  Every so often, the teams are asked to take a creative, funny photo.  They write answers on their answer sheets and send pictures to the host. They know where they are supposed to be and how to ask questions if they become stuck.

Collaboration Comes Naturally

There are no forced icebreakers or awkward introductions. Collaboration happens because:

  • the challenges require it
  • everyone has something to contribute
  • success feels shared

Even people who are usually quiet or hesitant in group settings often find themselves participating naturally.

Energy, Laughter, and Momentum

As the experience unfolds, teams tend to:

  • loosen up
  • laugh more
  • move faster
  • cheer each other on

It’s common to forget about phones, email, and to-do lists entirely. Many participants say time flies by.

A Fun, Celebratory Finish

At the end of the experience, groups come back together for a wrap-up and prize ceremony. This moment celebrates:

  • creativity
  • teamwork
  • problem-solving
  • and a job well done

It’s lighthearted, positive, and leaves people feeling energized rather than drained.

What You Don’t Need to Worry About

You don’t need:

  • escape room experience
  • to be “good at puzzles”
  • fancy clothing
  • Being put on the spot
  • physical strength or athletic ability

You do need:

  • curiosity
  • openness
  • A willingness to try
  • To collaborate
  • comfortable shoes
  • weather appropriate clothes

That’s it.

Why First-Timers Love It

People new to Escape the Box® often say they were surprised by:

  • how quickly they felt engaged
  • how natural the collaboration felt
  • how connected they felt to their team afterward
  • how memorable the experience was

For corporate teams, conferences, offsites, and large group events, it’s an easy way to create a shared experience without pressure or awkwardness.

Final Thoughts

Your first Escape the Box® event isn’t about winning or being perfect, it’s about showing up, playing together, and solving something as a group. Whether you’re attending with coworkers, conference peers, or a large organization, you can expect an experience that’s thoughtful, energizing, and genuinely fun.

Most first-timers leave saying the same thing:

“I didn’t expect to enjoy that as much as I did.”
